Rockin' In 2010 Bash

On Friday, January 15th, at 7:00PM in the Wesley Center, Lambda invites you to join us in celebrating the new year! This is the Lambda Student Union's official bash to kick off an awesome semester!!! (Yes, we know this is last minute.)

While you may have been expecting our usual "luau" theme, we just decided to do things differently. No hawaiian shirts. No fake palm trees. That's right- we're shakin' things up.

Just bring your fabulous self and some friends to play some games, enjoy some free food, catch up with old friends and even make some new ones! Don't be left OUT in the cold! Come join the fun!

A Day in Hand

A Day in Hand is on September 26. It is an online event that is meant to inspire the LGBT community to photograph themselves holding hands with their friends and family. The purpose is to represent a silent protest against the stigma of LGBT public displays of affection.

In support of the event, Lambda is encouraging all members to participate by photographing themselves holding hands with people close to them in their lives. The photos may then be submitted to Lambda via either lambda@utk.edu or the Facebook event for A Day in Hand. The Exec board wil then submit the photos together to the Day in Hand website, presenting the story of Lamdba at UT in Knoxville. This will be a great visibility event for the organization.

Also, there will be an unofficial Lambda photoshoot party for the event on Friday, September 25 at 9pm. At the event, during the night, many cameras will be on site to photograph all participants holding hands in support of A Day in Hand. These photos will then be submittes along with all other submissions on Sep. 26.

Kinsey Sicks Dragapella

Join us on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 7:30pm in the Clarence Brown Theater for a truly unique and entertaining event! America's favorite Dragapella Beauty Shop Quartet, the Kinsey Sicks, will be performing.

Admission is $2 for students, $4 for UT faculty, staff, and affiliates, and $10 for the general public. Hope to see you there!

LGBT Commission's Film Series

Join us on Thursday September 24th from 6:30 to 8:00pm in Hodges Library 213 for the third film in the LGBT Commission's film series.

"A Jihad for Love" is Mr. Sharma’s debut and is the world’s first feature documentary to explore the complex global intersections between Islam and homosexuality. Parvez enters the many worlds of Islam by illuminating multiple stories as diverse as Islam itself. In Western media, the concept of ‘jihad’ is often narrowly equated with holy war. But Jihad also has a deeper meaning, its literal Arabic being ‘struggle’ or ‘to strive in the path of God’. In this film we meet several characters engaged in their personal Jihad’s for love. The people in this film have a lot to teach us about love. Their pursuit of love has brought them into conflicts with their countries, families, and even themselves. Such is the quandary of being both homosexual and Muslim, a combination so taboo that very little about it has been documented.

Dollar Bowling Night

We're all going to the Strikes and Spares Family Bowling to have a great time together, so join us!

We're meeting on campus in Staff Lot 9 (by the UC) to carpool at 7:30pm to figure out who's riding with whom. We leave for the Bowling Alley at 7:45pm exactly (you MUST be at the lot before then or you WILL be left). There is usually a line at the alley, which calls for all of this promptness.

First Meeting of the Semester

Lambda hopes everynoe had an excellent summer and is transitioning well into the new school year. We have our first general meeting on Monday August 24th at 6 PM in UC rooms 223-224. Come see what Lambda has in store for this school year!
